correct use of verb “use”

Main Post:

me and a friend were discussing and he said he “used” a pub. meaning he frequented it. is that correct?

if it is, wouldn’t that mean i can say use “use” for practically everything?

am i “using a sandwich” when im eating it, or “using a person” when im talking to them?

he says those are examples are correct but im unsure. pls help settle this

Top Comment: I would say "using a person" generally has a negative meaning. It means take advantage of or exploit. So, if I'm using my friend Bob, it means I'm getting the good end of the friendship and probably not giving anything in return. I always "borrow" money and never pay it back, etc. You use facilities, like a bathroom. "I'm going to use the bathroom." I don't say "use a pub" when I mean, "go to a pub to drink." I also don't "use a sandwich" when I mean "I eat it." I only use a sandwich in a kind of strange context... "I use sandwiches to fuel before a competition." As in, what do you use to accomplish a goal. But, although I can imagine it as a sentence, it seems really unlikely that someone would say it like that. But, maybe it could work in that situation. We use tools. We use things to do other things. We use people only in certain circumstances which are often bad circumstances. That's my take.

"Use for" vs. "Use as"?

Main Post:

Hi there.
what's the difference (if any) , and which is more appropriate when indicating a clear or perceived misuse?
Consider the following example:

Our teacher used loaded firearms as teaching aids.

vs.

Our teacher used loaded firearms for teaching aids.

Is there a BIG difference between the two? Does one of them imply certain context? Or just a more usual pattern? Which one sounds more natural?
Does the "for" construct also bear a connotation of a "makeshift" something used "instead of the real thing"?

Top Comment: I would use 'as'. I agree that 'for' could imply makeshift, but it also sounds less formal to me, so I would be more likely to use it if I was writing an amusing anecdote, rather than in a serious context.

What do people use Reddit for?

Main Post:

I’ve recently joined Reddit after a couple of conversations with friends who have said they use it for a variety of reasons.

I want to try and get the most out of it - so I’m wondering what people use it for in the most instances and what they get out of it?

Thank you!

Newbie on Reddit: How to Start and What to Do Here?

Main Post:

Hello, dear Redditors!

I've just joined Reddit, and I must say it seems quite fascinating and diverse. However, I'm a bit confused, to be honest. I would be grateful for your help and advice.

What can you do on Reddit?

What subreddits do you visit, and why?

How difficult is it to gain subscribers and create an active community around your subreddit?

How can I make the most of Reddit?

I know there are many experienced users here, and I would appreciate any advice or guidance. Please share your knowledge and experiences to help me and other newcomers navigate this amazing world of Reddit.

Thanks in advance!

How do people use Reddit?

Main Post:

I saw a question on here earlier about what people use it for, but I'm also interested to know how regular users navigate it. Do you just view the home feed? Do you look through each of your subreddits? Do you make lists? Do you use third-party viewers to improve the experience? Etc etc. Any tips welcome!

How to use reddit effectively?

Main Post:

I'm a starting freelance artist finding more platforms to share my work with, a friend suggested reddit but didn't really help me with how to start an account properly, i feel like a boomer using a new device (im literally 19) ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ All my posts are getting rejected here and there saying I don't have enough karma/my account is still new. While I understand why it's happening, how do I actually make my account viable to post on certain communities? How old should my account really be and how do I get 'karma' (from what I understand, karma are post count?... But how can I get karmas if i can't even post lol maybe I'm just being plain stupid but that's a genuine question)

Any help/tips would be very appreciated !
